Pregnancy care is often described through a series of milestones: the positive test, the first ultrasound, the due date. But the story of your family is weaved from the billions of small moments between those milestones. Not just the first kick, but every one thereafter. In family medicine, we are lucky, because the doctor-patient relationship has no expiration date. I am trained to offer family care far before and far beyond when your baby is born. Because of this, I’m able to witness more. More milestones, yes, but more of the in-between moments too.
I get to know many of my patients before they’ve conceived, which means I have a strong scope of the patient’s overall health and conditions. When you have begun trying to grow your family, we have a solid foundation to build upon, making decisions regarding your medications, lifestyle, and overall health that are backed by firsthand experience as your provider. As a mother myself, there’s a special type of joy in peeking into a secret for anticipating parents, getting to share in their excitement in such early stages.
Once a patient conceives, the focus shifts to prenatal care. These visits are about monitoring health, of course, but they’re also about sharing in the excitement (and sometimes the worries) of early pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, care builds to monitor the health of the mother and baby, but equally vital is what is happening outside of the office in order to prepare. Medical visits are just one piece of a healthy pregnancy; education, emotional support, and preparation for parenthood are equally important. I encourage patients to think beyond the clinic: Are they eating nourishing foods? Are they moving their bodies in ways that feel good? Are they connecting with their support system? These questions matter just as much as the size of the baby or the results of a blood test.
As the pregnancy continues, visits become increasingly focused on labor and delivery. Because we’re an independent practice, the chance is high that I’ll be delivering your baby. During such a pivotal, painful, and precious moment, you want the doctor you know and trust.
The good news for both of us is that our care relationship doesn’t stop at your child’s birth. My family medicine training allows me to be your baby’s primary care doctor, allowing continuity that other birth attendants cannot provide. By your baby’s first weight check, our relationship is already firmly established.
When the going gets tough, I like to remind families that parenting isn’t a recipe—it’s an experiment. Some days, it feels like a success. Other days, it feels like a disaster. And that’s okay. Parenting feels hard because it is hard, not because you’re doing it wrong.
Choosing a healthcare provider for your pregnancy journey is about more than just medical expertise—it’s about trust, continuity, and reliability. Family medicine offers this: a lifelong partnership built on knowing you, your health, and your family’s story.
With a family medicine provider, you’re not just another patient, you’re part of a relationship that grows with you. And when the challenges of parenting feel overwhelming, you’ll have a trusted guide by your side. Because in the end, it’s not just about the milestones. It’s about the love, trust, and care woven into every step of the way.
