Why I Chose Family Medicine

My first career as a medical assistant inspired me to go back to school to become a doctor. I enjoy the full spectrum of family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, and have a special interest in nutrition science. I love helping people to understand their medical conditions and overall health. It gives me great joy when patients have an “aha” moment around medical knowledge and can make solid plans and decisions about their health and the health of their loved ones.

One of the most rewarding aspects of family medicine is developing long-term relationships with my patients. This connection allows me to truly understand who they are as individuals and how the non-medical aspects of their lives might impact their physical and mental well-being. It also enables me to serve as their advisor and supporter as they navigate important medical decisions. As J.R.R. Tolkien wisely said, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

How I Survive Minnesota Winters

Oh, so many ways! I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, scrapbooking, outdoor exercise, and quilting. When the temperatures drop, you’ll find me curled up with a good book or working on a craft project. If time permits, I’ll bundle up to take a walk outside at a nearby park—fresh air and movement always help.

My Advice for Staying Healthy

Move your body! Exercise! Exercise! Move your body and do it outside if you are able! Staying active is key to maintaining both physical and mental health, no matter the season. You don’t have to do something super intense, like running, a brisk walk will do!
