New national suicide and crisis line is now live — just dial 988

A new national suicide hotline, designed to help callers experiencing a range of mental health emergencies, launched July 16. The 988 line works like 911 does for emergencies, but for mental health. Anyone in the United States can text or call 988 to reach trained counselors who can help them cope with a mental health emergency and direct them to additional resources for mental health and substance use treatment. Services are available in multiple languages. If you, a patient, or a loved one needs mental health support, dial 988 to receive services.

The Lifeline’s existing 10-digit number still works, but now also addresses general mental health concerns and emotional distress, as well as suicide crises. While many people refer individuals experiencing a mental health emergency to an Emergency Department or to 911, trained counselors available through 988 can connect callers with local crisis teams, where available.
